What is an Intervention Order?

An intervention order is a legal measure designed to protect individuals from harassment, abuse, or threats. These orders can be sought in situations involving family violence, personal safety concerns, or stalking. They set conditions on the behaviour of the respondent to prevent further harm or distress to the applicant.

Here are some of the intervention order FAQs we are often asked

Contact us if you have any questions relating to family violence intervention orders or personal safety intervention orders

The conditions of a family intervention order (IVO) are put in place to keep people safe. The conditions may include prohibiting the respondent from a number of actions including committing family violence and attempting to locate or follow the affected family member/s.

The examples of people that are able to make a personal safety intervention order include a neighbour, friend, student, work colleague, employer, employee, tenant and landlord. A personal safety intervention order is made for any person who is not a family member.

Personal order intervention orders (PSIO) are dealt with by the civil jurisdiction of the court and will not result in you having a criminal record. However if you breach the PSIO conditions then you may be charged with a criminal offence.
